This early American portrait is one of only 23 known from this period. The technique and composition illustrate the religious preferences of the early settlers, as it does not appear overly opulent or vain, even utilizing a simple pine frame. The black background and muted colors demonstrate the dutiful stoicism that was so highly esteemed by the Pilgrims and Puritans of the era.
Reverend John Woodbridge (1613–1696) was an English minister who was forced to leave Oxford for refusing to align with the Anglican Church. He married the daughter of Massachusetts Governor Thomas Dudley and helped to found the town of Andover, Massachusetts.
Created in 1670. Acquired by 2019 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
