Artist John Smibert, a Scottish-born painter and architect, established an early tradition of portraiture in Boston. The work of Smibert reportedly influenced the development of several American-born artists, such as John Singleton Copley (adopted son of Peter Pelham) and John Trumbull. Benjamin Colman (1673–1747) was greatly influenced by the Mathers. He advocated for a separation between Anglicans and Congregationalists, but he maintained a sympathetic and mutually supportive relationship with the Church of England.
Painted in 1734 by John Smibert. Acquired by 2019 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
