In 1859, On the Origin of Species introduced Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution to the world. Although theories of evolution were already widespread, Darwin’s mechanism of natural selection offered a novel explanation of how evolution occurred. The book provoked an immediate and widespread reaction. Many Christians, notably the botanist Asa Gray, believed Darwin’s theories were compatible with the Christian faith, while others argued evolution contradicted the biblical account of creation. This is the second edition, printed in January 1860, only two months after the first. It contained several adjustments, including the famous addition of the phrase “by the Creator” to the book’s concluding lines. The new line read, “There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one . . .”

Printed in 1860 by John Murray, London, England. Acquired by 1860 by E. L. Dutton.[1] Acquired by 1930 by Dr. M. R. Buchanan, London, England.[2] Acquired by 2020 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.

Notes: [1] The inscription “E. L. Dutton Jan. 16. 1860” appears on the half-title page. This is likely Edward Lennox Dutton, 4th Baron Sherborne, a British diplomat with interests in ornithology and archaeology. He served as the president of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society. [2] The inscription “London Aug. 15, 1930 DR. M. R. Buchanan” appears on the half-title page. It has not been possible to identify this individual with certainty.
