George MacDonald (1824–1905) was a Scottish lecturer, author, and minister who later taught at the University of London. MacDonald’s use of fantasy as a literary medium influenced great authors such as Lewis Carrol, J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and Madeleine L’Engle. In 1946, Lewis assembled and edited an anthology of George MacDonald’s works and sermons. This copy, printed in 1947, contains C. S. Lewis’s signature from 1952 and a note in his hand that corrects a printed statement on page 15. At some point, Elisabeth Elliot acquired the book and kept it until her death in 2015.
