In 1958, Elisabeth Elliot and her daughter, Valerie, returned to Ecuador to serve as missionaries to the Waodäni people after the death of her husband, Jim, and four other missionaries. This picture, taken by Elisabeth, shows the reaction of a Waodäni named Gikita to her attempt at speaking his language. Elisabeth, being a linguist, quickly learned the language of the Waodäni. She was one of the first to create a written version, with the help of Rachel Saint and their translator, Dayumæ.
