This copy of Hellenics (known today as the Hellenica) by Xenophon (431–354 BC) was used by Elisabeth Elliot née Howard while studying at Wheaton College. During that time, Elisabeth met Jim Elliot, and in 1948, they studied this book together, which includes Jim’s “doodles.” In 1952, they separately traveled to Ecuador for mission work, and in 1953, they married in Quito, Ecuador. Tragically, in 1956, five of the missionaries, including Jim, were killed by a group of tribesmen who perceived them as a threat. In 1958, Elisabeth and her young daughter, Valerie, returned to Ecuador and served as missionaries to the Waodäni people until their return to the United States in 1963. Elisabeth went on to write dozens of books and served as a stylistic consultant for the committee of the New International Version of the Bible.

Edited prior to 1928 by Herbert Hailstone, Cambridge, England; Published in 1928 by Macmillan and Co., Limited, London, England. Used in the late 1940s by Elisabeth Elliot (1926–2015);[1] Via death in 2015 to Lars Gren, Little Rock, Arkansas; Donated in 2020 to Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.

Notes: [1] Elisabeth inscribed her name on the front flyleaf: “Betty Howard—Williston Hall.” The book also contains the sticky note mentioned in the description: “Studied with Jim E.—May 1948—the doodles are his.”
