Martin Luther penned this 1522 pamphlet, in which he criticized monastic dietary rules related to fasting, the sale of papal permissions, vows of chastity and poverty, ecclesiastical clothing, and adornments of churches, cells, and homes — in his words, all things that are external. He contrasted these things with God’s kingdom, which he identified as internal. A letter he wrote to Georg Spalatin requesting that he forward the first draft to Hans von Berlepsch, Luther’s guardian while he was hiding at the Wartburg tower, suggests the pamphlet may have been sparked by conversations between the two men. This Augsburg edition, one of the first printed editions, does not include the “Reply to Texts Cited in Defense of the Doctrines of Men,” which was included in later editions.

Printed in 1522 by Sigmund Grimm and Marcus (“Marx”) Wirsung, Augsburg, Germany.[1][2] Purchased by the 2000s by Gene Albert (Christian Heritage Museum Collection), Hagerstown, Maryland;[3] Privately purchased in 2010 by Green Collection, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, under the curatorial care of Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.

Notes: [1] See WA 10.2:66 in Luther, Martin. D. Martin Luthers Werke. Kritische Gesamtausgabe. 73 vols. Weimar: Herman Böhlaus Nachfolger, 1883-2009. Grimm and Wirsung are the likely printers. [2] Two initials are inscribed at the bottom of the title page woodcut: “6” and “P.” [3] Christian Heritage Museum estimates they purchased this about 8–10 years prior to the sale to Green Collection. They do not recall from whom, and have no records of that purchase.
