This is an early German translation of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, titled Onkel Tom’s Hüttle. Originally published as a series of installments in the American abolitionist newspaper The National Era, the book sold more than one million copies in the United States and Europe during its first year in print. Stowe drew upon biblical themes and imagery throughout her narrative to condemn slavery as a moral atrocity. The novel would eventually go through dozens of editions in multiple languages. This copy was published in one volume.

Printed in 1852 by Carl Lindow, Berlin. Acquired by 2019 by Ted Steinbock, private collector, Louisville, Kentucky; Privately purchased in 2020 by Museum of the Bible, Washington, DC.
